The 2024 quarterly refuse and recycling bill from the service provider (Penn Waste) has increased from $97.25 in 2023 to $103.76 for 2024. The changes in the contract costs consist of a $4.77 quarterly increase from 2023 to 2024, and a quarterly tipping fee of $1.74. A tipping fee is paid by those who dispose of waste in a landfill; it is used to cover the costs of opening, maintaining, and closing the landfill, as well as the costs of disposing of waste and to offset the cost of operations.
In the September 21, 2023, edition of the York Daily Record indicated, the reporter indicated that a tipping fee is “part of the 2024 fiscal budget approved by the [York County Solid Waste] authority. The tipping fee at the York County Resource Recovery Center will increase to $79 per ton, the release states. For the average household in York County, which generates a ton of trash a year, the increase will be less than $2 per week. That does not include the cost paid to waste management companies for removal of garbage. The authority cited rising operational costs, current and future environmental control upgrades and the obligation to prepare for the future as the reasons for the increase.”
